Having fun with serviettes and stencils…

Sunday afternoons are my best – home alone and a perfect time to get creative. I chose a wooden box with 3 drawers.

I started off by painting the entire box in a turquoise blue acrylic craft paint. The colour matched to a beautiful peacock serviette I had kept for this project.

When dry, I sanded lightly with medium grit sand paper, focusing on the edges and corners to create a weathered, distressed effect. I chose a funky pink acrylic for the drawers as I needed it to pop. When all was dry, I gave the box a light second coat of paint and sanded again.

Decided to decoupage both sides of the box with a serviette – the peacock fitted perfectly. The serviette was 3 ply, so I separated the layers and used only the layer with the print. I placed it flat on the side of the box and painted on a thin coat of non-shine varnish. It stuck perfectly. When dry, I painted a second coat and then repeated the process on the opposite side.
It started looking good.

I needed some detail on the drawers, so I chose a small mesh stencil with a pretty design. I decided to try out some depth by doing a drop-shadow and it really worked well.
first stenciled with white opaque acrylic paint, and when dry stenciled over the white with dark blue, just off centre so that the white wasn’t completely covered.

Repeated these steps on the other two drawers and on the top of the cabinet, placing the same stencil at different angles.
My project was completed in no time at all and I had enjoyed every moment!
